Attention Drum Teachers and General Music Teachers….
Here’s how you can avoid copyright concerns and get over 150 pages of printable handouts that you can use to teach all aspects of drumming, and not have to write them yourself!
Or…. you can print and bind them into books for a profit if you wish!
Are you concerned about copyright restrictions when you are teaching?
I believe that music authors deserve to be paid for their music, so on principle I have never photocopied music to give students from books or burned CD’s of copyrighted material for students.
Instead I had to write it all myself. I used to sit up for hours before every day of teaching, scrawling out pages and pages of music for my students. Even in the days before computers I would always write out beats and exercises by hand, and then photocopy them before school.
Eventually I refined my music down into a series of books – I had basic reading materials, drum kit patterns, and drum solos, all contained within simple volumes that I could print out and sell to my students.
Now you can do this too – but without the hassle of writing everything yourself!
Drums Book One
A fundamental tuition system for Drum Lessons
This book contains everything you need to learn drums – and nothing you don’t!
Firstly let me tell you what this package is NOT
- It is NOT a “teach yourself the drums” method
- It is NOT a “pack of hot drum licks”
- It is NOT designed for teaching yourself at home
- It is NOT full of technical explanations and text
It is designed to be a complete workbook system to work through with a teacher. It is written in achievable, definable steps, and includes everything that is needed at the fundamental level.
There are basically two types of tutor book available – Those that have a great deal of text and explanation, and those that don’t.
My books DO NOT have lots of text… let me tell you why!
My reasoning is based on the years of research I did in my Master of Music degree. I researched and experimented with my drum teaching, and found that most students basically ignored text which was written in books.
This is the same philosophy found in the texts of the Suzuki Method, and numerous other methods found in other instruments. An author can write loads of information down in text and in diagrams, but if the student does not read it then it is pointless.
Please don’t get me wrong – I am not saying that text based books are bad! For experienced learners and professionals the text based tutor book is extremely helpful. I can recommend several that I have personally used over the years with great success. However as a beginner, particularly a child beginner, research shows that the less text the better!
Every student is different, and needs things communicated in different ways! For this reason it is better that the teacher explains things in the way that they feel most comfortable, without any distraction from additional text and materials.
What Students learn in lessons
There are basically three things that a drum student needs to learn from their teacher. Although every teacher has a different way of looking at things, most would agree with me that the most important things for a student to learn are:
- They need to Learn the correct technique
- They need to Learn to read music
- They need to enjoy it, so they keep motivated!
Sections are the key
Each book is divided into three sections. There is a technique and reading section, a Drum Kit Patterns section and a Drum Kit Solos Section.
The philosophy behind this is that the teacher can direct the lesson in whatever way they need. Some students will need more time on the reading and technique section than others, and it is up to the teacher how to implement these different sections.
Technique and Reading Section
|The Technique and Reading section covers very important aspects of playing the drums, including basic rudiments, reading simple rhythms on the Snare Drum and basic technical skills like how to hold the sticks correctly. These are backed up with simple diagrams, which communicate in as few words possible the concepts which we are trying to teach.
The contents of this section is as follows:
One Concept at a time is introduced throughout these drum books. This is a fundamental philosophy of this type of music education publication. If you give too much information in one hit, the student won’t take in the important content.
You will notice on the sample pages that I have used European Time Names as titles for many of the pages. This is simply to introduce the new concept of this type of note. It doesn’t matter if you choose to use European Time Names (crotchet, quaver etc) or American Time Names (quarter note, eighth note etc) or even phonetic names – The teacher can teach this material in whatever way they feel comfortable.
Drum Kit Patterns Section
There are as many ways known to teach the basic rock drum beat as there as ways to boil an egg!
It doesn’t matter how you do it, the first drum lesson will nearly always include learning a basic rock beat with the Bass Drum, Snare Drum and Hi-Hat. Then probably will follow learning some variations on this with the bass drum changing a little.
These beats have been written in many different ways in many different books in attempts to make it easier to learn, however it doesnt matter how simply it is presented in a book it wont be any easier to play!
In my books these drum beats are presented in their simplest form, and are ordered very carefully, so that progression occurs in simple and easy steps.
Each page introduces one new concept, and it is varied through the rest of the page.
Some of the pages have ideas for modern songs which match the beats presented. This will inspire and motivate the student to learn these beats, if they wish to be able to play these particular songs.
Drum Kit Solos Section
|Included in the book is 10 solos which compliment the material presented throughout. These can be used as assessment pieces, or can be used to simply bring together the technique, music reading and coordination learned in the other sections.
These solos DO NOT have backing tracks. They are designed to bring together the components taught so far. Backing tracks distract from the learning process at this stage, and need to be introduced separately. They are important, however the skill of playing in time with a backing track is a separate skill which should be taught on its own.
So I hear you ask…..What makes this drum book different from the others?
You can Print It Out for your students as many times as you need!
Yes, thats right. I am completely crazy!, but I have no problems with letting teachers print out what they need after they have purchased this product.
There are a great many excellent drum books on the market already, however you cannot legally copy them and use them for students. If you do copy pages from a published book you are breaking the law. The author and publishers of the book deserve to be paid for their hard work!
If however, you choose to purchase my system of learning, I will allow you Unlimited Reprints of this material for your students.
All I ask is that you do not sell or distribute the file – however you can:
- Print out individual pages as handouts
- print the entire book and sell them on to your students
I will even include a certificate of purchase, that you can print out and stick in the back of the book, if you are concerned to make sure the students know that you are legally entitled to print the books.
How to make an extra $1500 income in a year….
So now you know that you can legally print out this material, if you are prepared to purchase this product once, but the main benefit of it for a teacher is one of residual income
I am quite happy to let teachers print as many copies as they need of this material, and sell copies to students. You can of course set your own price, however I have found that this book is easily worth $20 to a student, considering that it contains all the work they need to do for up to a year!
It contains everything in a basic snare drum tutor, along with everything in a basic drum kit tutor! Therefore for $20 they have everything they need, and they don’t have to buy another book!
What a great opportunity for you! All you need to do is print it out on your home computer printer, take it to a copy shop, where you can get it printed and bound
Let’s say you had 100 New students start over the course of a year:
|Printing cost of 100 Books
(assuming you can get photocopying @ 5c per side)
|Binding Cost (@ $2.00 per book)||$200.00|
|Total Cost of producing books||$490.00|
|Sell 100 books @ $20.00 per copy||$2000.00|
|Your Profit for every 100 books||$1510.00|
And after you have paid the very reasonable investment I am asking for this product you will have this extra income for every year you are teaching!
Obviously not everyone has 100 new students every year, but if you make 100 books you will sell them all eventually – that is going to happen if you are a full time drum teacher!
The other obvious point is one of convenience, once you have printed the books all you have to do is keep a pile of them in your studio, and when a new student starts you simply give them a book in their first lesson and add it to their bill. Simple! When you are getting low you simply go and print another batch!
Have you ever asked a student to go to a shop to buy a book, and then they keep on turning up every week without it? – It used to happen to me time and time again. This never happens when using my books, as they have it at the first lesson every time!
You can choose to print the color cover, or to save on printing cost you can simply print the supplied black and white cover on colored card – It works just fine!
let’s see what others are saying about “Drums Book One”:
I’ve been using Kevin’s drum books for years. They are excellent because they contain everything that is required for beginning students, and nothing that isnt! I used to make them buy a snare tutor, and a drum kit tutor, and this added to the cost of drum sticks and a practice pad would make the upfront cost quite a lot for the parents. With Kevin’s books at least I can cut down the cost a little for the students, and make sure that they have everything they need to start with. The extra bonus of a little extra income every year is also welcome. I never need to do any photocopying – I just work out of the books!
So what would you expect to pay for the printing rights on a book like this?
Authors are usually paid around 10% of the sale price of a publication, so even one years license for 100 copies of a single book should cost at least $200, however I am not selling one years license – I am selling an indefinite license!
I am not here to rip anyone off – and this is not some internet scam system where you have to pay continual fees. A single investment of just $97 will buy you the printing rights for “Drums Book One”, and you will never have to pay again!
Printing these books you will make this investment back with the sale of just ten copies to your students, and then every book you sell after this will be pure profit for you!
Alternatively you can print them as handouts, secure in the knowledge that you are not breaking any copyright laws.
But Wait – That’s not the end of the story….
You might think I am absolutely mad – but For a Strictly Limited Time I am including:
Drums Book Two
All the student needs to learn in the second year!
Utilizing Exactly the Same Format is the follow up book, designed to extend a little further the concepts in the first book.
The same format is good for a number of reasons. Firstly because the student is familiar with the idea of doing a little technical and reading work, together with a little drum kit work they don’t mind continuing in the same manner.
The book expands on many of the concepts first learned in “Drums Book One”, but it is not yet an advanced book. It can still be completed in around a year of learning, which will give a sense of achievement in the student.
Technique and Reading Section
Drum Kit Patterns Section
Drum Kit Solos Section
OK, so you get all 69 pages of the original Drums Book One PLUS all 75 Pages of Drums Book Two included FREE! That is nearly 150 pages of teaching material – You are sure to find what you need in these books!
Once again, you have the choice of printing the pages as handouts, or printing the complete books and selling them on to your students – It is entirely up to you!

Click Here to download and try your free sample pages of “Printable Drum Books”. These files need the adobe acrobat reader, which most computers already have installed. The pages can be re sized to fit your paper and are completely indexed so you can find the page you need quickly and easily.

“enjoyable and challenging for students without causing them too much frustration”
Having used the materials in both books I have found them to be of great value to my teaching set up for both beginners and also more experienced students. The exercises gradually build on essential skills that drum students need to know without over cluttering the pages with unneeded text.
In addition to this the exercises are enjoyable for students and challenge them without causing too much frustration. I would recommend these books for any teacher of the drum kit as it covers a wide range of styles, techniques, rudiments, music theory and essential reading skills. I have been a teacher for over 15 years and have found that these books are a great addition to my teaching resources, a definite thumbs up, well done.
